Reality-based - affecting change in our society/environemnt Maybe it just begins with kids learning about there is a globe out there - building tolerance through familiarity. Social issues can be complicated, but research is showing that this generation is extremely interested in social issues and improving the world. For middle school students-just looking beyond themselves is a good first step I want to do something with Kiva next. What is Kiva? GVC was all about creating a web site around a global issue between three classrooms, but ours never went anywhere. Singapore is a unique country! yes Lucy International schools rock global education Kiva is an org where you loan money (as low as $25) to someone in an underdelveloped country and they use it to begin a business and then repay you. something like 90% of the loans are repaid. the orientals have a lot to teach us Is there a good central place that lists all these opportunities for "new" connected learning teachers (not cutting edge)? Paula, sounds like a great project i gave kiva gift certificates for Christmas! You can get involved in the community that gives to Kiva reality-based learning is about empowering students to affect that change I love that idea. We all have so much in the US, that giving gifts almost seems redundant making REAL relationships between students in different cultures can definitely affect that change Sharon, have you checked into the Roots and Shoots program? YES! and in Europe also Roots and Shoots is about involving kids in issues that affect people, the environment or animals Karl Fisch started a shift happens kiva team where you gave three $25 gift certificates to friends, asking them to choose the charity/person to support.
