It is hard to automate, though we have tried to do so in other projects I have worked on. So, for example, the records creator was automated. It is hard if you do not have context we can also automate metadata on the actual use of the object, like number of users who downloaded it and used and so on http://memling.cs.kuleuven.ac.be/amg/ documents our work to date... but if you took it from an LMS you have plenty of information A project I worked on a few years ago, we were able to collect quite a bit of metadata during the design process of instruction and automatically attach it to the appropriate objects context dependancies depend also on the degree of formalism we choose. Even with objects that have a high degree of context, a user's path between objects could be recoded as a type of 'tag' which could in turn influence future learners' progress through the objects. Marie, i'd be interested in more details about the project you mentioned I agree Marie. It was a tool we developed for the U.S. Navy to convert classroom based courses into an object based web course. The tool only creates design documents (this includes all scorm metadata related to actual content - technical metadata is absent until the object is created) what an excellent introductory graphic that web site has, Marie - will check the application later... We had a great team developing the Changing Course app. From the graphic designer to our programmer and all of our instructional designers, it was was a wonderful experiance. I'm sorry to say, that I don't think the tool is being used by the Navy. But, the research behind the tool is very high quality, and it should be used. I don't think we should "make the teachers use it". If it is of value, the teachers will use it of their own desires. At the moment, I work with metadata only on a part time basis. Crossing these layers as Marie describes them sounds interesting. I think navigation is one of those high level apps that could work over existing LORs my understanding is that at the moment, many repositories do not communicate with each other, this places major limitations on navigation between and among any high level apps also the metadata instances do not contain any information about links metadata standard gives the posibility right, that's where RDF comes in but teachers do not fill the fields I think that a folksonomic approach might overcome the 'empty fields' problem but it has to be an easy, 'no brainer' We tried a project in Canada called eduSource to link various repositories. I agree!' I agree... we need context I agree about tags context of creation, context of use, context even on recomendation makes sense, but I also kind of cut across. I too think that folksonomies may be very useful.
