My suspicious is that it is either the roots of bushes that were there, or the drain tile for the downspout is leaking underground That sounds like a good plan, it is likely a water problem either way, with the roots damageing the drain tile, or it failing on it's own. My fear is that I'll fix the problem, and then it will stabilize with the crack "wide" rather than "narrow". Still, if it's stable, I can deal with it That's true if it stops moving then at least it won't crack any more. John, could you please explain again about the margins on the sashes? Would shellac or something like that be a good choice, something that dries to a hard finish? For clapboards, I use a 4" natural bristle brush, and a sash brush for trim A good brush will last forever, if you take care of it - so it's worthy buying good brushes. BTW, DH hand cleaner works well to get out dried oil based paint and primer from the brush. I clean with thinner, then DH hand cleaner, then soap and water Our neighbor recommends Goop hand cleaner... John, what materials do you prefer for which materials? I agree with Ralph about a good quality brush lasting forever. For oil based paint use a good black natural bristle. For latex use 100% nylon. Goop is probably similar stuff what about polyester(?) brushes Thanks to all. Buy them at big box or paint store? For cleaning i just use mineral spirits and a brush comb with oil based. I also use a brush spinner Ralph, I prefer the nylon to the nylon/polyseter blends, but they do work well in a pinch. the hand cleaner seems to keep the brushes softer than just using thinner - or maybe I'm not getting it clean enough with the thinner After I clean and spin I put a little solvent back in the brush, prior to wraping it up. DH hand cleaner - the white and blue "tubs" they sell in auto parts store
